Mahjong is not hard to learn. In my classes, I teach the basics to get you started typically in just two lessons.

Mahj 101:   Learn the basics – review the tiles, read the National Mahjong League (NMJL) card, setting up a game, practice dealing, and play a game or two.
Mahj 102:  Review the basics and apply them to real-time game play with a little help from the instructor if you need it.
