Doing the Charleston in American Mahjong: A Beginner’s Guide to Tile Passing

,

For many new players, the Charleston feels like the most intimidating part of American mahjong. It happens quickly, before the game officially begins, and can feel high-pressure if you’re still learning the tiles.

In reality, the Charleston is one of the most useful—and enjoyable—parts of the game once you understand how it works.

What Is the Charleston?

The Charleston is a structured tile-passing sequence that takes place after the tiles are dealt and before regular play begins. Its purpose is to help players improve their hands, make early strategic decisions, and add a social rhythm to the table.

The Charleston is unique to American mahjong and is a defining feature of the game.

The Basic Charleston Pattern

In a standard game, the Charleston usually follows this sequence:

  1. Pass three tiles to the right
  2. Pass three tiles across
  3. Pass three tiles to the left

Some tables play an optional second Charleston (left, across, right). Always confirm house rules before starting.

What to Pass (and What to Keep)

The goal of the Charleston isn’t perfection—it’s progress.

Good tiles to pass:

  • Tiles that don’t fit your chosen hand
  • Single, unpaired tiles
  • Suits you’re not using

Tiles to keep:

  • Pairs
  • Jokers
  • Flowers
  • Tiles clearly needed for your hand

Early in the Charleston, it’s okay if your strategy isn’t fully formed.

Charleston Etiquette

Good etiquette keeps the game moving:

  • Pass tiles promptly
  • Don’t comment on what you receive
  • Avoid signaling reactions
  • Keep tiles flat and discreet

Why the Charleston Matters

The Charleston helps:

  • Improve hands before play begins
  • Encourage early decision making
  • Set the pace of the game
  • Add a social, interactive element

With practice, the Charleston becomes less stressful and more strategic—and often something players look forward to.

Because once it’s over, the game truly begins.

And you’re already thinking about…
just one more tile.
